Homemade Pita bread ⎪ How to make Pita bread

Pita bread is a round, flat, leavened bread made from wheat flour. It usually comes with a pocket like opening that can be served as a wrap or like a taco. Since it’s made from whole wheat its healthy and filling. It’s a staple food in the Middle East and it’s neighbouring areas. I prepared the pita bread for making ChickenShawarma and Falafels and it turned out really good. Homemade Pita bread just tasted like Indian Jowar or Bajra roti to me and so I suggest you could also have it with some spicy lamb or prawn curry

  1. 750 g of whole wheat flour
  2. 2 tsps dry active yeast
  3. 250ml of water
  4. 1 tsp sugar
  5. 1 /2 tsp salt or as required
  6. 2 tbsps of olive oil

Procedure ⎪How to make Pita bread

  1. In a small bowl add warm water, dry yeast, sugar and stir well to see that no lumps are formed. Let the mixture rest for 15 mins until the mixture is bubbly and frothy at the top

  2. Meanwhile in a seperate bowl mix together flour, salt and olive oil

  3. Now add the frothy yeast mixture to the dry ingredients and knead to form a soft, smooth and spring like dough

  4. Knead the dough well and keep it covered for about 2 hrs or so, as to give it time to raise and get fluffy. Cover with a loose towel and make sure your kneading bowl is large enough as the dough will rise to double its quantity.

  5. After 2 hours, when the dough has raised make small equal sized balls and roll out to make round, flat breads.

  6. On a hot pan or griddle dry roast the bread, keeping covered for about 30 secs – 1 min and roast from both sides

  7. Your little pita breads are ready to be relished : )
